About Colombia, South America
Beautiful Colombia is rich in natural resources, with its main exports including petroleum, coal, coffee and other agricultural produce, and gold. It ranks second in the region for producing a significant amount of gold. Colombia’s gold mines are a current topic of conversation within the mining industry with many new companies searching for acquisitions within this mineral rich country.
The mining code of 2001 sought to encourage exploration and production of mineral resources and to limit the role of the government to one of a regulatory and administrative entity, with more production transferring to the private sector. In 2002, then President Alvaro Uribe Velez made it his personal crusade to portray to foreign investors that Colombia was safer than was being reported for businesses. The Colombian government is actively supporting large mining operations, which has attracted huge foreign investments into its country. The recent successes of Ventana Gold Corporation, Continental Gold, Colombia Mines and Barrick Gold Corporation have highlighted the great mining opportunities that exist within Colombia.
